Each individual Provincial Regulatory Body determines the amount of continuing education credits licensed Opticians in their province require, as well as the time-frame in which they require them.

Alberta - Alberta Opticians Association CE Credit Requirements

  • Licensed Optician
    A total of 20 continuing education credits over a 3 year period is required.
    A minimum of 12 credits in “eyeglass dispensing”, a maximum of 8 credits in “related fields”.
  • Certified Contact Lens Practitioner
    A total of 35 continuing education credits over a 3 year period is required.
    A minimum of 15 credits in “contact lens dispensing”, a minimum of 12 credits in “eyeglass dispensing” and a maximum of 8 credits in “related fields"

British Columbia - College of Opticians of British Columbia CE Credit Requirements

  • Registered Dispensing Opticians (practicing and non-practicing)
    In the three-year cycle, Dispensing Opticians are required to complete 21 credits. Require a minimum of 12 EG credits. 2/3 of credits must be obtained from a Professional Provider; 1/3 from any other providers.
  • Registered Contact Lens Fitter Dispensing Optician (practicing and non-practicing)
    In the three-year cycle, Contact Lens Fitter Dispensing Opticians are required to complete 36 credits. Require a minimum of 12 EG credits and 15 CL credits. 2/3 of credits must be obtained from a Professional Provider; 1/3 from any other providers.

Manitoba - Opticians of Manitoba CE Credit Requirements

  • Members holding an Opticians License
    1
    4 hours of continuing education credits to be earned over a three-year continuing education cycle, to be comprised of:
    o A minimum of 4 credits shall be accumulated for continuing education activities in eyeglasses practice
    o A minimum of 4 shall be accumulated for continuing education activities in contact lens practice.
    Of the total 14 hour requirement a maximum of 6 credits may be substituted by an activity in the ‘others’ category
  • Members who are Certified Contact Lens Opticians
    18 hours of continuing education credits to be earned over a three-year continuing education cycle, to be comprised of:
    o A minimum of 8 shall be accumulated for continuing education activities in contact lens practice.
    o A minimum of 4 credits shall be accumulated for continuing education activities in eyeglasses practice.
    Of the total 18 hour requirement a maximum of 6 credits may be substituted by an activity in the ‘others’ category

New Brunswick - Opticians Association of New Brunswick CE Credit Requirements

  • Dispensing Optician
    Every optician who does not hold a certificate of special qualification shall complete at least 19 approved credits within each three-year period.
  • Contact Lens Optician
    Every optician who holds a certificate of special qualification shall complete at least 22 approved credits within each 3 year period, at least 6 of which credits shall pertain to contact lenses

Newfoundland and Labrador - Dispensing Opticians Board of Newfoundland and Labrador CE Credit Requirements

  • Eyeglass dispensers must have 3 EG and 2 Related Fields [RF/ EG/CL] credits for a total of 5 CE credits each year.
     
  • CL Fitters must have 3EG, 3CL and 2RF credits for a total of 8 CE credits due June 30 with their payment of registration for license.

Nova Scotia - Nova Scotia Board of Dispensing Opticians CE Credit Requirements

The Nova Scotia Board of Dispensing Opticians currently require opticians to obtain 8 credit hours and contact lens fitters to obtain 10 credit hours on an annual basis.

Ontario - College of Opticians of Ontario CE Credit Requirements

Each Optician is required to submit a minimum of thirty (30) Continuing Education Credits at the completion of their individual Quality Assurance cycle. The required breakdown of these credits is listed below.

  • (EG) Eyeglasses - 8 credits minimum (no maximum - these are mandatory credits)
    Credits in this category represent topics associated with eyeglass technology. Fabrication, fitting techniques, emerging technology and product specific topics related to eyeglasses are all examples of this credit.
  • (CL) Contact Lenses - 8 credits minimum (no maximum - these are mandatory credits) 
    Credits in this category represent topics associated with contact lens technology. Fabrication, fitting techniques, emerging technology and product specific topics related to contact lenses are all examples of this credit.
  • (GB) General Business - 5 credits maximum (no minimum - these are optional credits)
    Credits in this category represent topics associated with general business practices. Financial, commercial services, sales techniques, as well as post-secondary business courses are all examples of this credit.
  • (PA) Professional Activity - 5 credits maximum (no minimum - these are optional credits)
    Credits in this category represent activities associated with the profession of Opticianry. Lab tours, AGM’s, regulatory presentations, trade shows are all examples of this credit.
  • (PE) Professional Experience - 5 credits maximum (no minimum - these are optional credits)

Prince Edward Island - Dispensing Opticians Board of Prince Edward Island CE Credit Requirements

It is understood that opticians who dispense eyeglasses only are required to have 3 hours of continuing education credits per year related to eyeglass dispensing.  Opticians who are also registered to dispense contact lenses must have 3 hours of continuing education credits related to eyeglass dispensing per year and 3 hours of continuing education credits related to contact lens practice per year.

Saskatchewan - Saskatchewan Ophthalmic Dispensers Association CE Credit Requirements

  • For a license in dispensing to be renewed, Council requires an applicant to produce evidence that in the preceding three years, he/she has attended at least eight hours of seminars in continuing education in Ophthalmic dispensing and an additional two hours in either dispensing or in contact lens seminars.
  • For a contact lens technician license to be renewed, a contact lens technician shall produce evidence of having attended at least:
     - five hours of seminars in ophthalmic dispensing;
     - five hours of seminars in contact lens work; and
     - in addition to the hours described in clauses (a) and (b), five hours in either ophthalmic dispensing seminars or contact lens seminars or in a combination of the two.
